{"id":462,"date":"2020-01-09T11:03:51","date_gmt":"2020-01-09T11:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visitcommunities.com\/jamaica\/?p=462"},"modified":"2020-01-09T11:07:49","modified_gmt":"2020-01-09T11:07:49","slug":"iipt-announces-the-winners-of-the-champions-in-challenge-awards-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/visitcommunities.com\/jamaica\/iipt-announces-the-winners-of-the-champions-in-challenge-awards-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"IIPT announces the winners of the Champions in Challenge Awards 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 4<sup>th<\/sup> annual Global Resilience Summit 2019 organised by the Global Travel &amp; Tourism Resilience Council concluded on 7<sup>th<\/sup> November at the Congress Centre, London with the announcement of the annual \u201cChampions in Challenge\u201d awards of the International Institute for Peace Through Tourism.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_463\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-463\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-463 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/visitcommunities.com\/jamaica\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Diana-McIntyre-Pike.jpg?resize=570%2C465&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/visitcommunities.com\/jamaica\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Diana-McIntyre-Pike.jpg?w=570&amp;ssl=1 570w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/visitcommunities.com\/jamaica\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Diana-McIntyre-Pike.jpg?resize=300%2C245&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/visitcommunities.com\/diana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diana McIntyre-Pike<\/a> president and founder of\u00a0 Countrystyle Community Tourism Network, Jamaica<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These awards, purposely presented within the Resilience Council events, focus on the importance of tourism as a force for good, aiding recovery, boosting resilience and promoting prosperity through ethical and sustainable practices.<\/p>\n<p>The IIPT (International Institute for Peace Through Tourism) is a not-for-profit organization founded 33 years ago by Dr. Louis D\u2019Amore and is dedicated to fostering and facilitating tourism initiatives which contribute to international understanding and cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>It is founded on two simple, but powerful, premises:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>That tourism, possibly the largest global industry, can become the world\u2019s first global Peace Industry, and<\/li>\n<li>That every tourist is potentially an Ambassador of Peace<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Past IIPT award winners include business leaders, Ministers, Members of Parliament and organizations across the globe who have been instrumental in showcasing to the world that travel &amp; tourism is one of humanity\u2019s truly global activities that bring prosperity, which in turn fosters peace.<\/p>\n<p>The winners of the Champions in Challenge Awards 2019 are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Change Maker in Tourism<\/strong> Award<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dasho Tshering Tobgay, former Prime Minister of Bhutan<\/strong> \u2013 for placing environment above economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>From being a carbon neutral country, Bhutan has gone to being a carbon negative country. With 72 percent forest coverage, the overall carbon production has been nullified. Bhutan produces around 1.5 million tons of carbon every year but because of the immense greenery, more than 6 million tons of carbon is absorbed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Resiliency in Business<\/strong> Award<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-464 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/visitcommunities.com\/jamaica\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IIPT-announces-the-winners-of-the-Champions-in-Challenge-Awards-2019-London.jpg?resize=1024%2C608&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/visitcommunities.com\/jamaica\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IIPT-announces-the-winners-of-the-Champions-in-Challenge-Awards-2019-London.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/visitcommunities.com\/jamaica\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IIPT-announces-the-winners-of-the-Champions-in-Challenge-Awards-2019-London.jpg?resize=300%2C178&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/visitcommunities.com\/jamaica\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IIPT-announces-the-winners-of-the-Champions-in-Challenge-Awards-2019-London.jpg?resize=768%2C456&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Countrystyle Community Tourism Network, Jamaica<\/strong> \u2013 for developing entrepreneurship and innovation in community based tourism, particularly through the \u201cVillages as Businesses\u201d program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discover Dominica Authority <\/strong>\u2013 for the \u201cRecovery for Rediscovery\u201d campaign in the wake of Hurricane Maria.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the Awards, Ajay Prakash, President of IIPT India and Executive Vice President of IIPT said: \u201cToday more than ever there is a need to reiterate the role that tourism can and should play to engender peace and prosperity. These awards seek to acknowledge, felicitate and hold up as role models exceptional individuals and organizations who have gone above and beyond the call of duty or business as usual and stood up boldly, especially in times of challenge or crisis to create real human value and transform lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Taleb Rifai, Chairman of the IIPT Advisory Board and former Secretary General of UNWTO said, \u201cResilience and Tourism are about sustaining life on the planet. People are going to continue to travel so it is important to honour the visionaries in this industry since the vision is Tourism for Humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anita Mendiratta, IIPT Ambassador at large for Global Relations and who conducted the awards event remarked, \u201cChampions in Challenge are individuals, true leaders who have the purpose, principles and passion to stand up and lead when others struggle to step forward \u2013 especially in a crisis.
